He replied, \u201cThe coming of God\u2019s kingdom is not something you can see just by watching for it carefully. <sup class=\"versenum\">21<\/sup> People will not say, \u2018Here it is.\u2019 Or, \u2018There it is.\u2019 God\u2019s kingdom is among you.\u201d <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">22<\/sup> Then Jesus spoke to his disciples. \u201cThe time is coming,\u201d he said, \u201cwhen you will long to see one of the days of the Son of Man. But you won\u2019t see it. <sup class=\"versenum\">23<\/sup> People will tell you, \u2018There he is!\u2019 Or, \u2018Here he is!\u2019 Don\u2019t go running off after them. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">24<\/sup> \u201cWhen the Son of Man comes, he will be like the lightning. It flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. <sup class=\"versenum\">25<\/sup> But first the Son of Man must suffer many things. He will not be accepted by the people of today. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">26<\/sup> \u201cRemember how it was in the days of Noah. It will be the same when the Son of Man comes. <sup class=\"versenum\">27<\/sup> People were eating and drinking. They were getting married. They were giving their daughters to be married. They did all those things right up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">28<\/sup> \u201cIt was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking. They were buying and selling. They were planting and building. <sup class=\"versenum\">29<\/sup> But on the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven. And all the people were destroyed. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">30<\/sup> \u201cIt will be just like that on the day the Son of Man is shown to the world. <sup class=\"versenum\">31<\/sup> Suppose someone is on the roof of his house on that day. And suppose his goods are inside the house. He should not go down to get them. No one in the field should go back for anything either. <sup class=\"versenum\">32<\/sup> Remember Lot\u2019s wife! <sup class=\"versenum\">33<\/sup> Anyone who tries to keep his life will lose it. Anyone who loses his life will keep it.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">34<\/sup> \u201cI tell you, on that night two people will be in one bed. One person will be taken and the other left. <sup class=\"versenum\">35-36<\/sup> Two women will be grinding grain together. One will be taken and the other left.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">37<\/sup> \u201cWhere, Lord?\u201d his disciples asked.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0He replied, \u201cThe vultures will gather where there is a dead body.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke 17:20-37&amp;version=nirv\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 17:20-37<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>There are a lot of great ideas in this passage that we could choose to highlight, but for this journal entry, I will focus on an idea that is a little baffling to me. It is found in Jesus\u2019 words as this passage opens:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Once the Pharisees asked Jesus when God\u2019s kingdom would come. He replied, \u201cThe coming of God\u2019s kingdom is not something you can see just by watching for it carefully.\u00a0People will not say, \u2018Here it is.\u2019 Or, \u2018There it is.\u2019 God\u2019s kingdom is among you.\u201d<\/strong> (v. 20-21)<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201cGod\u2019s kingdom is among you.\u201d This phrase can be baffling if we think about it long enough. The Pharisees are expecting a coming kingdom, but instead they are faced with an already present kingdom \u2013 one that they don\u2019t see.<\/p>\r\n<p>In other places, John the Baptist, Jesus\u2019 disciples, and even Jesus preach that God\u2019s kingdom is \u201ccoming\u201d, but here we read in Jesus\u2019 response that it is already here. At least to me, this makes me wonder if one way of defining God\u2019s kingdom is simply anywhere where \u201cJesus\u201d is. Perhaps we could broaden it to be anywhere that \u201cGod\u201d is \u2013 so that it includes God the Father, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.<\/p>\r\n<p>We also could broaden this approach even further, since Paul calls the church \u201cthe Body of Christ\u201d. <em>(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=1+Corinthians+12:27&amp;version=NIRV\" title=\"Read 1 Corinthians 12:27 on BibleGateway.com\" class=\"underline\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1 Corinthians 12:27<\/a>)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>With this framework, I could easily wonder: <strong>Do I miss seeing God\u2019s kingdom around me as I live life? Do I ever miss opportunities to be a part of God\u2019s kingdom because I am not paying attention to what God is doing? Would I live any differently knowing that I can be a part of God\u2019s kingdom today?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--97\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
