1\u00a0<\/sup>Early in the morning all the chief priests and the leaders of the people decided to execute Jesus. 2\u00a0<\/sup>They tied him up, led him away, and handed him over to Pilate, the governor.<\/p>

3\u00a0<\/sup>Then Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, regretted what had happened when he saw that Jesus was condemned. He brought the 30 silver coins back to the chief priests and leaders. 4\u00a0<\/sup>He said, \u201cI\u2019ve sinned by betraying an innocent man.\u201d<\/p>

They replied, \u201cWhat do we care? That\u2019s your problem.\u201d<\/p>

5\u00a0<\/sup>So he threw the money into the temple, went away, and hanged himself.<\/p>

6\u00a0<\/sup>The chief priests took the money and said, \u201cIt\u2019s not right to put it into the temple treasury, because it\u2019s blood money.\u201d 7\u00a0<\/sup>So they decided to use it to buy a potter\u2019s field for the burial of strangers. 8\u00a0<\/sup>That\u2019s why that field has been called the Field of Blood ever since. 9\u00a0<\/sup>Then what the prophet Jeremiah had said came true, \u201cThey took the 30 silver coins, the price the people of Israel had placed on him, 10\u00a0<\/sup>and used the coins to buy a potter\u2019s field, as the Lord had directed me.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

When reading in Matthew\u2019s gospel about the fate of Judas Iscariot, I am startled by what actually happens. Only Matthew includes the fate of Jesus\u2019 betrayer and in what Matthew tells us is a brief, but also amazing, conversation between Judas Iscariot and the chief priests and religious leaders.<\/p>\r\n

Matthew transitions onto Judas\u2019 story by telling us: \u201cThen Judas, who had betrayed Jesus, regretted what had happened when he saw that Jesus was condemned. He brought the 30 silver coins back to the chief priests and leaders. He said, \u2018I\u2019ve sinned by betraying an innocent man.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (v. 3-4a)<\/p>\r\n

On realizing that he had sinned, Judas tries to undo what had been done. However, the response he receives is amazing. The chief priests and leaders replied, \u201cWhat do we care? That\u2019s your problem.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 4b)<\/p>\r\n

In the end, Judas Iscariot realized what he did was wrong and he regretted what happened. In contrast, the chief priests and leaders \u2013 who were at least just as guilty as Judas was \u2013 are completely indifferent to the fact that they have sent an innocent man to die.<\/p>\r\n

These people were supposed to be God\u2019s representatives on earth, but while God\u2019s character is one of love, nothing in the chief priests\u2019 and leaders\u2019 actions demonstrate a God that loves humanity. The chief priests and leaders statement of apathy towards Jesus\u2019 condemnation reveals how far they had fallen away from knowing God.<\/p>\r\n

In contrast, every action Jesus did throughout His ministry demonstrated God\u2019s love. Even through the events surrounding the crucifixion, Jesus demonstrated God\u2019s character more accurately than any of the religious leaders did.<\/p>\r\n

Jesus chose to enter the world during a time when God\u2019s character was the most misrepresented in all of history. He chose to enter the world at a time when He would ultimately be rejected and condemned without committing a crime. He chose to enter the world when the world needed to really see a clear picture of God in a time of apathy and indifference.<\/p>\r\n

Jesus entered the world when He did for you and for me! His sacrifice opens the way for our salvation \u2013 even if the leaders that weekend were apathetic towards the life they had condemned to die.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
