He put him there to work its ground and to take care of it.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God gave the man a command. He said, \u201cYou can eat the fruit of any tree that is in the garden. <sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>But you must not eat the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. If you do, you can be sure that you will die.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"passage-spacer\"><\/div>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">3:1\u00a0<\/sup>The serpent was more clever than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. The serpent said to the woman, \u201cDid God really say, \u2018You must not eat the fruit of any tree that is in the garden\u2019?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">2\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said to the serpent, \u201cWe can eat the fruit of the trees that are in the garden. <sup class=\"versenum\">3\u00a0<\/sup>But God did say, \u2018You must not eat the fruit of the tree that is in the middle of the garden. Do not even touch it. If you do, you will die.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">4\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cYou can be sure that you won\u2019t die,\u201d the serpent said to the woman. <sup class=\"versenum\">5\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGod knows that when you eat the fruit of that tree, you will know things you have never known before. You will be able to tell the difference between good and evil. You will be like God.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">6\u00a0<\/sup>The woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good to eat. It was also pleasing to look at. And it would make a person wise. So she took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her. And he ate it.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">7\u00a0<\/sup>Then both of them knew things they had never known before. They realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made clothes for themselves.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>Then the man and his wife heard the Lord God walking in the garden. It was the coolest time of the day. They hid from the Lord God among the trees of the garden.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>But the Lord God called out to the man. \u201cWhere are you?\u201d he asked.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI heard you in the garden,\u201d the man answered. \u201cI was afraid. I was naked, so I hid.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God said, \u201cWho told you that you were naked? Have you eaten the fruit of the tree I commanded you not to eat?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>The man said, \u201cIt was the woman you put here with me. She gave me some fruit from the tree. And I ate it.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Then the Lord God said to the woman, \u201cWhat have you done?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The woman said, \u201cThe serpent tricked me. That\u2019s why I ate the fruit.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>So the Lord God spoke to the serpent. He said, \u201cBecause you have done this,<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"poetry\"><p class=\"line\">\u201cI am putting a curse on you.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You are cursed more than all of the livestock<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and all of the wild animals.<br>You will crawl on the ground.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You will eat dust<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0all of the days of your life.<br><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>I will put hatred<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0between you and the woman.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Your children and her children will be enemies.<br>Her son will crush your head.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And you will crush his heel.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"top-05\"><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God said to the woman,<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"poetry\"><p class=\"line\">\u201cI will greatly increase your pain when you give birth.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0You will be in pain when you have children.<br>You will long for your husband.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And he will rule over you.\u201d<\/p><\/div>\r\n<p class=\"top-05\"><sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God said to Adam, \u201cYou listened to your wife. You ate the fruit of the tree that I commanded you about. I said, \u2018You must not eat its fruit.\u2019<\/p>\r\n<div class=\"poetry\"><p class=\"line\">\u201cSo I am putting a curse on the ground because of what you did.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0All the days of your life you will have to work hard<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to get food from the ground.<br><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>You will eat the plants of the field,<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0even though the ground produces thorns and thistles.<br><sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>You will have to work hard and sweat a lot<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0to produce the food you eat.<br>You were made out of the ground.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0And you will return to it.<br>You are dust.<br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0So you will return to it.\u201d<\/p><\/div> <p class=\"top-05\"><sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>Adam named his wife Eve. She would become the mother of every living person.<\/p>\r\n<p><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God made clothes out of animal skins for Adam and his wife to wear. <sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>The Lord God said, \u201cThe man has become like one of us. He can now tell the difference between good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and pick fruit from the tree of life and eat it. It would have been easy for Him to yell at them, but instead it seems as though He is more interested in loving them, but also emphasizing the consequences of the sin.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Secondly, sin causes us to blame one another. Avoiding blame (i.e. Taking responsibility) is an important maturing step for us as we grow our relationship with God.<\/li>\r\n\t<li>Thirdly, God promised death to Adam and Eve for eating the forbidden fruit, but death did not come immediately for them. Instead, we read that God made clothing out of animal skins, and for that to happen, an animal would have had to die.
