Focus Passage: John 18:3-11 (NLT)<\/div>

3\u00a0<\/sup>The leading priests and Pharisees had given Judas a contingent of Roman soldiers and Temple guards to accompany him. Now with blazing torches, lanterns, and weapons, they arrived at the olive grove.<\/p>

4\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus fully realized all that was going to happen to him, so he stepped forward to meet them. \u201cWho are you looking for?\u201d he asked.<\/p>

5\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cJesus the Nazarene,\u201d they replied.<\/p>

\u201cI am he,\u201d Jesus said. (Judas, who betrayed him, was standing with them.) 6\u00a0<\/sup>As Jesus said \u201cI am he,\u201d they all drew back and fell to the ground! 7\u00a0<\/sup>Once more he asked them, \u201cWho are you looking for?\u201d<\/p>

And again they replied, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.\u201d<\/p>

8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cI told you that I am he,\u201d Jesus said. \u201cAnd since I am the one you want, let these others go.\u201d 9\u00a0<\/sup>He did this to fulfill his own statement: \u201cI did not lose a single one of those you have given me.\u201d<\/p>

10\u00a0<\/sup>Then Simon Peter drew a sword and slashed off the right ear of Malchus, the high priest\u2019s slave. 11\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus said to Peter, \u201cPut your sword back into its sheath. Shall I not drink from the cup of suffering the Father has given me?\u201d<\/p>\r\n

During the commotion surrounding Jesus arrest in the garden, each of the four gospel writers give us different details that happened in this key event in Jesus\u2019 life. When looking at the unique details of each gospel, it is John\u2019s gospel that really stands apart with the details He includes.<\/p>\r\n

When the mob arrives to arrest Jesus, John tells us that Jesus \u201cstepped forward to meet them. \u2018Who are you looking for?\u2019 he asked.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 4b)<\/p>\r\n

The mob responds back, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 5a)<\/p>\r\n

So Jesus answers back, \u201cI am he.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 5b)<\/p>\r\n

I\u2019m not sure why Jesus chose to answer in this specific way, but what happens at that instant is incredible. Verse 6 tells us what happened: \u201cAs Jesus said \u2018I am he,\u2019 they all drew back and fell to the ground!<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\r\n

My imagination wants to think that in Jesus\u2019 short statement, a shockwave of divinity is sent out that knocks everyone present off their feet, but this is not as likely to be the case.<\/p>\r\n

However, in the phrase \u201cI am\u201d, Jesus echoes God\u2019s statement to Moses at the burning bush when He tells Moses that His name is \u201cI am\u201d.<\/p>\r\n

At the very least, this response may have taken this mob by surprise because why would Jesus respond in a way that echoed God and acknowledged who He was when they were intent on coming to harm Him.<\/p>\r\n

However, I believe a split-second of divinity was released in these words that did catch this crowd off guard and knocked them down.<\/p>\r\n

But even while this happened, the crowd\u2019s goal is not phased. Perhaps Jesus is a little surprised at what happened, so He asks the mob again, \u201cWho are you looking for?<\/strong>\u201d (v. 7a)<\/p>\r\n

The mob replied again, \u201cJesus the Nazarene.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 7b)<\/p>\r\n

Then we come to the defining statement that John draws our attention to: \u201c\u2018I told you that I am he,\u2019 Jesus said. \u2018And since I am the one you want, let these others go.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (v. 8)<\/p>\r\n

The mob was knocked off their feet, but not knocked off their mission. This tells me that we can be so stubborn that even seeing a brief glimpse of God\u2019s divinity is not enough to break our stubbornness.<\/p>\r\n

But this also tells me that Jesus is willing to protect us and endure the punishment for us. We deserve death for our sins, and Jesus is willing to pay the debt that we owe. And while He is moving towards the cross, He is even still looking out for the wellbeing of His followers.<\/p>\r\n

So while we can be so stubborn that God cannot get through, Jesus loves us so much that He doesn\u2019t want any harm to come to us while He is with us.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
