{"id":582,"date":"2022-10-11T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-10-11T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy-cam.tempurl.host\/gospeladventure\/?p=582&2022"},"modified":"2022-10-06T18:00:25","modified_gmt":"2022-10-07T00:00:25","slug":"joining-his-family-matthew-12-46-50","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/joining-his-family-matthew-12-46-50\/","title":{"rendered":"Joining His Family: Matthew 12:46-50"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 12:46-50 (NIV)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\">\r\n<p><sup>46\u00a0<\/sup>While Jesus was still talking to the crowd, his mother and brothers stood outside, wanting to speak to him. <sup>47\u00a0<\/sup>Someone told him, \u201cYour mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.\u201d<\/p> <p><sup>48\u00a0<\/sup>He replied to him, \u201cWho is my mother, and who are my brothers?\u201d <sup>49\u00a0<\/sup>Pointing to his disciples, he said, \u201cHere are my mother and my brothers. <sup>50\u00a0<\/sup>For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew 12:46-50&amp;version=niv\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 12:46-50<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>One thing I see that is interesting in this passage is that Jesus does not seem to actually leave the crowd to go out to see His mother and siblings. Instead, He turns the news that they are outside into a teaching moment that helps draw our attention onto something bigger than simply the immediate issue.<\/p>\r\n<p>Right in the middle of teaching a group of people, someone speaks up with a message for Jesus: \u201c<strong>Your mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting to speak to you.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 47)<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus replied to the man, \u201c<strong>\u2018Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?\u2019 Pointing to his disciples, he said, \u2018Here are my mother and my brothers. For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (v. 48-50)<\/p>\r\n<p>While Jesus is not discounting the role of His biological, human family, He wants to instead draw our attention onto God\u2019s bigger goal for each of us \u2013 and that is to become a member of His family. <\/p>\r\n<p>The disciples had left their occupations and families to travel around the country with Jesus. These disciples in a way had symbolically chosen to join a new family Jesus had invited them into. This short but powerful event helps teach us something about God\u2019s character and His love for us: <strong>God is more interested in inviting us into His family than He is about keeping us as mere acquaintances. Jesus loves each of us so much that He left Heaven and became human, to help bridge the separation that sin caused.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><em>The whole Godhead wants to adopt us.
