{"id":572,"date":"2023-05-16T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-16T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=572&2023"},"modified":"2023-05-11T18:00:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T00:00:13","slug":"speaking-through-silence-matthew-27-11-14","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/speaking-through-silence-matthew-27-11-14\/","title":{"rendered":"Speaking Through Silence: Matthew 27:11-14"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 27:11-14 (NIV)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\">\r\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>Meanwhile Jesus stood before the governor, and the governor asked him, \u201cAre you the king of the Jews?\u201d<\/p><p>\u201cYou have said so,\u201d Jesus replied.<\/p> <p><sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer. <sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Then Pilate asked him, \u201cDon\u2019t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?\u201d <sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge\u2014to the great amazement of the governor.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew 27:11-14&amp;version=niv\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 27:11-14<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>While other gospel writers go into more detail describing Jesus\u2019 interaction with Pilate, Matthew and Mark both share a phrase that I find fascinating. This phrase, while short, speaks volumes to what ended up happening that Passover weekend.<\/p>\r\n<p>When Jesus was brought before Pilate, and the Jewish leaders wanted swift judgment, they started giving all their accusations against Jesus. In the face of all the accusations the Jewish leaders brought, here is how Matthew describes Jesus\u2019 reaction: \u201c<strong>When he was accused by the chief priests and the elders, he gave no answer.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 12)<\/p>\r\n<p>This is very interesting in my mind. Jesus simply stays silent. Jesus gives no reaction to either validate or deny the charges that the leaders are bringing against Him. This case was probably the only case that was ever brought before Pilate where the accused person gave no response to the charges. This also catches Pilate\u2019s attention. In the next verse, Pilate asks Jesus, \u201c<strong>Don\u2019t you hear the testimony they are bringing against you?<\/strong>\u201d (v. 13)<\/p>\r\n<p>But here is the really fascinating part of this entire event. \u201c<strong>But Jesus made no reply, not even to a single charge\u2014to the great amazement of the governor.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 14)<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus essentially acts like a deaf person; He remained silent even to the big question Pilate gives Him.<\/p>\r\n<p>This prompts me to ask the question: <em>Did Jesus\u2019 silence speak more for His innocence or His guilt?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>In our minds, knowing the whole story, we might lean towards silence speaking towards innocence, but when your life is on the line, and you really are innocent, you don\u2019t stay silent. Instead, you say things to validate your innocence and things that counter the charges against you. However, if you are guilty, there is no reason to say anything.<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus\u2019 silence, while it doesn\u2019t make Him guilty, may have prompted Pilate to think He was guilty.<\/p>\r\n<p><em>So why does Jesus stay silent to the charges when He was innocent?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>I believe that He did so because of you and me. Jesus took on the guilt of the human race when He did not deserve it, and while He was completely innocent of anything worthy of death, He chose the path that lead to death for you and me. That is God\u2019s love, and that is Jesus\u2019 silence speaking for you and me.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--572\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
