{"id":563,"date":"2024-04-30T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-04-30T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=563&2024"},"modified":"2024-04-25T18:00:13","modified_gmt":"2024-04-26T00:00:13","slug":"modeling-jesus-matthew-26-69-75","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/modeling-jesus-matthew-26-69-75\/","title":{"rendered":"Modeling Jesus: Matthew 26:69-75"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 26:69-75 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>69<\/sup>\u00a0Now Peter was sitting outside in the courtyard, and a servant-girl came to him and said, &#8220;You too were with Jesus the Galilean.&#8221; <sup>70<\/sup>\u00a0But he denied <em>it<\/em> before them all, saying, &#8220;I do not know what you are talking about.&#8221; <sup>71<\/sup>\u00a0When he had gone out to the gateway, another <em>servant-girl<\/em> saw him and <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>said to those who were there, &#8220;This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.&#8221; <sup>72<\/sup>\u00a0And again he denied <em>it<\/em> with an oath, &#8220;I do not know the man.&#8221; <sup>73<\/sup>\u00a0A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, &#8220;Surely you too are <em>one<\/em> of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.&#8221; <sup>74<\/sup>\u00a0Then he began to curse and swear, &#8220;I do not know the man!&#8221; And immediately a rooster crowed. <sup>75<\/sup>\u00a0And Peter remembered the word which Jesus had said, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.&#8221;<\/span> And he went out and wept bitterly. <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew 26:69-75&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 26:69-75<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Each of the gospels include Peter\u2019s big denial on the night Jesus was arrested, but only the gospel of Matthew includes a number of ways Peter tried to hide his identity.<\/p>\r\n<p>After being let into the courtyard, Peter is one of only two disciples even remotely close to Jesus, and though the other disciple is not named, most scholars believe it was John, the author of the gospel that bears his name.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, while Peter followed Jesus to the place of His trial, it is likely only out of curiosity to learn what will happen, and perhaps a touch of pride to say that he was one of the ones who stuck with Jesus to the very end. But this decision actually opens the door for Peter\u2019s discovery and his denials.<\/p>\r\n<p>Something that has always intrigued me about this event relates to the denials themselves. In Matthew, we read that Peter makes an oath about not knowing Jesus, lies about it, and swears and curses as an additional way to separate himself from the Man on trial:<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<strong>When he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, \u2018This man was with Jesus of Nazareth.\u2019 And again he denied it with an oath, \u2018I do not know the man.\u2019 A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, \u2018Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.\u2019 Then he began to curse and swear, \u2018I do not know the man!\u2019 And immediately a rooster crowed.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 71-74)<\/p>\r\n<p>But Matthew also includes an interesting phrase that is hinted at in other gospels, but not framed in the same way: \u201c<strong>A little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, \u2018Surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (v. 73)<\/p>\r\n<p>This leads me to the big truth that simply spending time with Jesus will change us. We might not notice it, but others will see the difference. After three years of spending time with Jesus, Jesus had rubbed off onto Peter, and it was noticeable. Even the way Peter talked gave him away. So Peter tries to revert back to his \u201csailor days\u201d and curses and swears to even try to break that connection \u2013 that is until the rooster crowed and Peter woke up to what had just happened.<\/p>\r\n<p>Peter could not mask the mannerisms that he had picked up from being with Jesus, and the way he talked, the way he walked, and his attitude had become more like Jesus and less like the world. Even though Peter tried to mask it by swearing, cursing, and making oaths to the contrary, Jesus\u2019 character had clearly rubbed off onto Him.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>And Jesus\u2019 character will rub off onto us too, and the longer we walk with Him, the more visible it will be!<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--563\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
