{"id":562,"date":"2023-05-05T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=562&2023"},"modified":"2023-05-02T18:00:10","modified_gmt":"2023-05-03T00:00:10","slug":"a-broken-heart-luke-22-54-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/a-broken-heart-luke-22-54-62\/","title":{"rendered":"A Broken Heart: Luke 22:54-62"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Luke 22:54-62 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>54<\/sup>\u00a0Having arrested Him, they led Him <em>away<\/em> and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. <sup>55<\/sup>\u00a0After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. <sup>56<\/sup>\u00a0And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, &#8220;This man was with Him too.&#8221; <sup>57<\/sup>\u00a0But he denied <em>it,<\/em> saying, &#8220;Woman, I do not know Him.&#8221; <sup>58<\/sup>\u00a0A little later, another saw him and said, &#8220;You are <em>one<\/em> of them too!&#8221; But Peter said, &#8220;Man, I am not!&#8221; <sup>59<\/sup>\u00a0After about an hour had passed, another man <em>began<\/em> to insist, saying, &#8220;Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.&#8221; <sup>60<\/sup>\u00a0But Peter said, &#8220;Man, I do not know what you are talking about.&#8221; Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. <sup>61<\/sup>\u00a0The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.&#8221;<\/span> <sup>62<\/sup>\u00a0And he went out and wept bitterly. <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke 22:54-62&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 22:54-62<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Probably one of the most heartbreaking moments in the entire Bible comes at the end of this big event that all gospel writers choose to focus in on. This event is where Peter makes the biggest failure in his life, and it is likely a failure he would never forget moving forward from that point.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, only in the gospel of Luke do we see a key phrase that clearly elevates this event into being one of the top moments. Immediately following the third denial and right as a rooster crowed for the first time, \u201c<strong>The Lord turned and looked at Peter.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 61a)<\/p>\r\n<p>Whether the courtyard was visible to where the trial was being taken place, or whether this was while Jesus was being taken between rooms and maybe along the edge of the courtyard, at that key moment, Peter and Jesus made eye contact. That eye contact would have been enough to have broken Peter\u2019s heart more than simply having faced the realization that Jesus\u2019 prediction had come true.<\/p>\r\n<p>Peter did about the only thing we could expect Him to do in such a situation: This event finishes by saying, \u201c<strong>And he went out and wept bitterly.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 62) <\/p>\r\n<p>In this moment, Peter\u2019s heart has broken. Up to this point, he had been the star disciple, and in many ways, the leader of Jesus\u2019 followers, but we see a level of arrogance and pride in Peter\u2019s life prior to this point, while after this point, Peter\u2019s attitude is completely transformed. After all, how can you be arrogant or prideful if you failed in a huge way, after Jesus warned you about it and immediately before Jesus turned and looked at you directly?<\/p>\r\n<p>There was no returning to the old Peter. The eye contact may have been only a second long, but it was forever burned into Peter\u2019s mind at the instant he realized he had failed Jesus.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>This stands out to me because whether we realize it or not, Jesus sees all of our big successes and our big failures. Nothing is hidden from Him. This also means that nothing we have done in our past can make Him love us less, and nothing we choose to do in the future will change His feelings for us. Peter failed, and it broke his heart. But Jesus still loved and cared for Peter.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>When we fail, Jesus will still love and care for us, but like Peter\u2019s rejection of Jesus, every time we reject Jesus, it hurts His heart. If we love Jesus like we say we do as His followers, we should intentionally choose to live in a way that is right and in a way that won\u2019t break His heart.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--562\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
