{"id":561,"date":"2022-12-20T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-20T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=561&2022"},"modified":"2022-12-15T17:00:11","modified_gmt":"2022-12-16T00:00:11","slug":"framing-today-luke-22-54-62","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/framing-today-luke-22-54-62\/","title":{"rendered":"Framing Today: Luke 22:54-62"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Luke 22:54-62 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>54<\/sup>\u00a0Having arrested Him, they led Him <em>away<\/em> and brought Him to the house of the high priest; but Peter was following at a distance. <sup>55<\/sup>\u00a0After they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter was sitting among them. <sup>56<\/sup>\u00a0And a servant-girl, seeing him as he sat in the firelight and looking intently at him, said, &#8220;This man was with Him too.&#8221; <sup>57<\/sup>\u00a0But he denied <em>it,<\/em> saying, &#8220;Woman, I do not know Him.&#8221; <sup>58<\/sup>\u00a0A little later, another saw him and said, &#8220;You are <em>one<\/em> of them too!&#8221; But Peter said, &#8220;Man, I am not!&#8221; <sup>59<\/sup>\u00a0After about an hour had passed, another man <em>began<\/em> to insist, saying, &#8220;Certainly this man also was with Him, for he is a Galilean too.&#8221; <sup>60<\/sup>\u00a0But Peter said, &#8220;Man, I do not know what you are talking about.&#8221; Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed. <sup>61<\/sup>\u00a0The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.&#8221;<\/span> <sup>62<\/sup>\u00a0And he went out and wept bitterly. <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke 22:54-62&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 22:54-62<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>When reading events in the gospels that all four writers choose to cover, certain words or phrases that one author chooses to use often will jump off the page at me. It is this way in how all four gospel writers include Peter\u2019s huge failure on the night of Jesus\u2019 arrest.<\/p>\r\n<p>The gospel of John includes a brief summary of this event, while Matthew, Mark, and Luke go into greater detail about what happened. However, each of these three gospels shift the exact words of Jesus\u2019 warning to Peter.<\/p>\r\n<p>Matthew writes that Jesus said, \u201c<strong>Before a rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.<\/strong>\u201d (Matt 26:75)<\/p>\r\n<p>Mark includes an extra detail when he quotes Jesus as saying, \u201c<strong>Before a rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.<\/strong>\u201d (Mark 14:72) \u2013 Mark includes the detail where a rooster will crow twice rather than once.<\/p>\r\n<p>But only Luke includes a detail that frames time. Luke quotes Jesus warning Peter by saying, \u201c<strong>Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.<\/strong>\u201d (Luke 22:61) <\/p>\r\n<p>Luke includes the word \u201ctoday\u201d in his quote. This prompts me to look at Luke\u2019s writing differently.<\/p>\r\n<p>If there was any question in your mind about how people in that time period calculated their days, Luke tells us that these days must have been calculated from sunset to sunset \u2013 or at least that is how he does it. This has strong implications as we read Luke\u2019s writing, because not only did Luke write the gospel that bears his name, but also the book of Acts, which details the history of the early church.<\/p>\r\n<p>When Luke frames Jesus\u2019 words as saying that previous evening, after the sun has set, that \u201ctoday\u201d, Peter will deny Him, we get a picture that Luke firmly believes in a sunset-to-sunset way of framing a day, rather than our typical thought where days go from midnight-to-midnight or sunrise-to-sunrise.<\/p>\r\n<p>This observation is one that prompts me to pay closer attention to the other places in the scripture where Luke is writing about days, evenings, and nights and it helps me understand exactly the time Luke meant when he was writing.<\/p>\r\n<p>This also leads me to a big thought: <strong>Comparing how each gospel writer shares an event is just as important as comparing how a single writer uses a consistent idea throughout his writings. Had I not compared all four gospels, I may not have noticed Luke\u2019s unique framing of time, and now that I see this detail, I can use it to understand all other areas where Luke references the passing of time.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--561\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
