Focus Passage: Luke 22:66-71 (GW)<\/div>

66\u00a0<\/sup>In the morning the council of the people\u2019s leaders, the chief priests and the experts in Moses\u2019 Teachings, gathered together. They brought Jesus in front of their highest court and asked him, 67\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTell us, are you the Messiah?\u201d<\/p>

Jesus said to them, \u201cIf I tell you, you won\u2019t believe me. 68\u00a0<\/sup>And if I ask you, you won\u2019t answer. 69\u00a0<\/sup>But from now on, the Son of Man will be in the honored position\u2014the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.\u201d<\/p>

70\u00a0<\/sup>Then all of them said, \u201cSo you\u2019re the Son of God?\u201d<\/p>

Jesus answered them, \u201cYou\u2019re right to say that I am.\u201d<\/p>

71\u00a0<\/sup>Then they said, \u201cWhy do we need any more testimony? We\u2019ve heard him say it ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

When the religious leaders arrest Jesus and bring Him to trial, we can read an interesting phrase in the gospel of Luke that helps frame why Jesus was rejected by the religious leaders of that time.<\/p>\r\n

While the trial was happening, somewhat unsuccessfully, the religious leaders turn to Jesus an simply point blank ask Him: \u201cTell us, are you the Messiah?<\/strong>\u201d (v. 67a)<\/p>\r\n

This is important for our discussion because these religious leaders had a picture of who the Messiah would be, and what role the Messiah would take. Jesus seemed to act like \u201ca Messiah\u201d, but He wasn\u2019t really acting the role of \u201cthe Messiah\u201d they were looking for.<\/p>\r\n

Jesus\u2019 response to these leaders is amazing. He responds by saying, \u201cIf I tell you, you won\u2019t believe me. And if I ask you, you won\u2019t answer. But from now on, the Son of Man will be in the honored position\u2014the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 67b-69)<\/p>\r\n

Jesus was not the Messiah that the Jewish leaders expected to see, and Jesus responds by telling them that if He admits to being the Messiah that God had promised to their ancestors, they wouldn\u2019t believe Him anyways \u2013 and they wouldn\u2019t be open to a discussion about it either.<\/p>\r\n

Claiming to be the Messiah was certainly something Jesus could have done, but it would serve no point when these religious leaders only had one picture of the Messiah that would come, and their picture was flawed when compared with the Messiah God was sending into the world.<\/p>\r\n

So to these religious leaders, Jesus was not the Messiah; He didn\u2019t fit the role they had created for their messiah to fit into. But Jesus was a Messiah \u2013 Jesus was the Messiah that God had promised would come from the point where Adam and Eve sinned and were kicked out of the Garden of Eden.<\/p>\r\n

There was no way for Jesus to convince these leaders He was the Messiah, because they were only open to a messiah role that Jesus wouldn\u2019t fit. So Jesus doesn\u2019t even try to make that claim. Instead, He leans on His relationship to God the Father, and He focuses on this instead.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

This also challenges me to ask myself if I am trying to make Jesus fit a role He was never meant to fit in my own life. If so, it would be wise to open my mind to the role He was meant to play.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
