Focus Passage: Luke 22:66-71 (GW)<\/div>

66\u00a0<\/sup>In the morning the council of the people\u2019s leaders, the chief priests and the experts in Moses\u2019 Teachings, gathered together. They brought Jesus in front of their highest court and asked him, 67\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cTell us, are you the Messiah?\u201d<\/p>

Jesus said to them, \u201cIf I tell you, you won\u2019t believe me. 68\u00a0<\/sup>And if I ask you, you won\u2019t answer. 69\u00a0<\/sup>But from now on, the Son of Man will be in the honored position\u2014the one next to God the Father on the heavenly throne.\u201d<\/p>

70\u00a0<\/sup>Then all of them said, \u201cSo you\u2019re the Son of God?\u201d<\/p>

Jesus answered them, \u201cYou\u2019re right to say that I am.\u201d<\/p>

71\u00a0<\/sup>Then they said, \u201cWhy do we need any more testimony? We\u2019ve heard him say it ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\r\n

Often times for these journal entries, I draw out an idea from the way a verse or phrase stands out in my mind. However, in our event for this journal entry, to really see the big idea, we must draw from two areas in the gospel of Luke to really catch the implications in Jesus\u2019 words when responding to the religious leaders on the night of His arrest.<\/p>\r\n

When Jesus is pulled in for questioning, they ultimately ask Him the question, \u201cSo you\u2019re the Son of God?<\/strong>\u201d (v. 70a)<\/p>\r\n

This question was meant to be a trap question for Jesus because they would immediately use His response to build the claim blasphemy \u2013 in this case, it would be making oneself equal to God.<\/p>\r\n

However, before sharing Jesus\u2019 response, let\u2019s bring our attention to Luke\u2019s record of Jesus\u2019 geneaology, which is found in Luke 3:23-38. Luke begins it with Jesus, and then traces it all the way back to God: \u201cJesus, so people thought, was the son of Joseph, son of Eli, son of Matthat, . . . son of Enos, son of Seth, son of Adam, son of God.<\/strong>\u201d (Luke 3:23b-24a, 38)<\/p>\r\n

In this genealogy, everyone who is a member of the human race can trace their ancestry back to God, which then makes Jesus\u2019 response to the religious leaders even more amazing: \u201cYou\u2019re right to say that I am.<\/strong>\u201d (22:70b)<\/p>\r\n

But here is where things get interesting. The religious leaders respond to Jesus\u2019 answer by saying, \u201cWhy do we need any more testimony? We\u2019ve heard him say it ourselves.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 71) This tells us that they were closed-minded towards the truth.<\/p>\r\n

While Jesus was born of a virgin and God the Father was His Father in a more direct way, even if Joseph was His actual dad, Jesus could still lay claim to being a descendant of God. Luke\u2019s genealogy points us to the truth that God started it all, and He formed the human race. In this way, God the Father is \u201cthe Father\u201d of humanity. By rejecting Jesus\u2019 claim of being God\u2019s Son, the religious leaders also turned their back on God the Father as their Creator, which tells us they have unknowingly sided with God\u2019s enemy.<\/p>\r\n

This truth reminds us that we all can claim royalty as God\u2019s children, but if we choose to share that God is our Father, we would also be wise to act in a way that honors Him.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
