{"id":544,"date":"2023-04-18T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=544&2023"},"modified":"2023-04-13T18:00:16","modified_gmt":"2023-04-14T00:00:16","slug":"the-eyewitnesses-matthew-28-11-15","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/the-eyewitnesses-matthew-28-11-15\/","title":{"rendered":"The Eyewitnesses: Matthew 28:11-15"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 28:11-15 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0Now while they were on their way, some of the guard came into the city and reported to the chief priests all that had happened. <sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0And when they had assembled with the elders and consulted together, they gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, <sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0and said, &#8220;You are to say, &#8216;His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.&#8217; <sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0And if this should come to the governor&#8217;s ears, we will win him over and keep you out of trouble.&#8221; <sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0And they took the money and did as they had been instructed; and this story was widely spread among the Jews, <em>and is<\/em> to this day.<\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew 28:11-15&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 28:11-15<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The eyewitnesses to the resurrection were a very unlikely group of people. Jesus\u2019 disciples, who He had tried to share details with, were nowhere to be found; they were hiding in an upstairs room with the door locked. The actual eyewitnesses were placed at the tomb by the people who heard what Jesus said, and were the most nervous about it. The religious leaders and chief priests placed guards by the tomb to make sure that it was not disturbed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Something I find interesting about this event is about what gospel actually includes it: Matthew. Of all the gospels I would have expected to find this in, the most likely one would be Luke, the researcher and interviewer of the eye-witnesses to Jesus\u2019 life.<\/p>\r\n<p>But Matthew is the one to share about this event, which makes me wonder if he made friends with one of the guards who was bribed, and learned what happened surrounding the chief priests bribing the guards. Or perhaps Matthew, being a tax collector by trade, noticed the shift in lifestyle that the eyewitness guards had following this event, and he concluded that a large sum of money changed hands because the guards now had a greater level of luxury \u2013 something that if it had been anyone else would have created higher taxes for them.<\/p>\r\n<p>But I also wonder if one or more of the guards actually converted to Christianity following this event. I wonder if some of them helped start the rumor, but when Jesus began appearing to people during the weeks following the resurrection, they gave up the lie in favor of sharing the truth. <em>I wonder if being an eyewitness to the actual resurrection actually changed the hearts of some of these rough, calloused soldiers.<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>For Matthew to have known and included this detail when Luke did not tells me that Matthew included it for a purpose, and that purpose was not only to describe how far the priests and leaders had gone to rejecting Jesus, but perhaps also to let us know that not all of the guards held fast to the lie.
