{"id":515,"date":"2022-04-01T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-04-01T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=515&2022"},"modified":"2022-03-29T18:00:22","modified_gmt":"2022-03-30T00:00:22","slug":"validating-him-before-his-ministry-matthew-3-13-17","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/validating-him-before-his-ministry-matthew-3-13-17\/","title":{"rendered":"Validating Him before His Ministry: Matthew 3:13-17"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 3:13-17 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0Then Jesus <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>arrived from Galilee at the Jordan <em>coming<\/em> to John, to be baptized by him. <sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0But John tried to prevent Him, saying, &#8220;I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?&#8221; <sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0But Jesus answering said to him, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;Permit <em>it<\/em> at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness.&#8221;<\/span> Then he <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>permitted Him. <sup>16<\/sup>\u00a0After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove <em>and<\/em> lighting on Him, <sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, &#8220;This is <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">Or <em>My Son, the Beloved<\/em><\/span>My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.&#8221; <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew 3:13-17&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 3:13-17<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>When I read about Jesus\u2019 baptism at the start of His ministry, the only detail in this event that the three gospels share is what happens immediately after Jesus comes up out of the water. Matthew, Mark, and Luke all give different details leading up to the baptism, and how detailed each gospel describes the baptism is unique as well.<\/p>\r\n<p>It would seem that when we take all three gospel records together, the one big thing they want us to realize is not the baptism itself, but instead that God the Father and the Holy Spirit show up.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u201c<strong>After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove\u00a0<em>and<\/em>\u00a0lighting on Him,\u00a0and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, \u2018This is\u00a0My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (v. 16-17)<\/p>\r\n<p>Matthew uses the most words to describe this event, while Luke uses the least. Luke\u2019s gospel simply describes the whole baptism event like this: \u201c<strong>Now when all the people were baptized, Jesus was also baptized, and while He was praying, heaven was opened,\u00a0and the Holy Spirit descended upon Him in bodily form like a dove, and a voice came out of heaven, \u2018You are My beloved Son, in You I am well-pleased.\u2019<\/strong>\u201d (Luke 3:21-22)<\/p>\r\n<p>Luke shares no details about John the Baptist\u2019s interaction with Jesus prior to being baptized. Instead both Luke and Mark skim over the actual baptism to bring us the big thing they want to emphasize: <strong>God showed up!<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>This brings me to what likely is the key idea each of these gospels wants us to focus in on: <strong>At the very beginning of Jesus\u2019 ministry, before the teaching, the preaching, the healing, or even calling any disciples, God the Father and the Holy Spirit show up to validate Jesus and what He has done <\/strong><em>(i.e. being baptized)<\/em><strong> and what He is about to do over the next three and a half years.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--515\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
