{"id":459,"date":"2026-05-05T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-05T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=459&2026"},"modified":"2026-04-30T18:00:00","modified_gmt":"2026-05-01T00:00:00","slug":"saving-his-people-matthew-1-18-25","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/saving-his-people-matthew-1-18-25\/","title":{"rendered":"Saving His People: Matthew 1:18-25"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Matthew 1:18-25 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>18<\/sup>\u00a0Now the birth of Jesus Christ was as follows: when His mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child by the Holy Spirit. <sup>19<\/sup>\u00a0And Joseph her husband, being a righteous man and not wanting to disgrace her, planned <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">Or <em>to divorce her<\/em><\/span>to send her away secretly. <sup>20<\/sup>\u00a0But when he had considered this, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, &#8220;Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for the Child who has been <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">Lit <em>begotten<\/em><\/span>conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit. <sup>21<\/sup>\u00a0She will bear a Son; and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.&#8221; <sup>22<\/sup>\u00a0Now all this took place to fulfill what was spoken by the Lord through the prophet: <sup>23<\/sup>\u00a0&#8220;B<span class=\"small-caps\">EHOLD<\/span>, <span class=\"small-caps\">THE VIRGIN SHALL BE WITH<\/span> <span class=\"small-caps\">CHILD AND SHALL BEAR A<\/span> S<span class=\"small-caps\">ON<\/span>, <span class=\"small-caps\">AND THEY SHALL CALL<\/span> H<span class=\"small-caps\">IS NAME<\/span> I<span class=\"small-caps\">MMANUEL<\/span>,&#8221; which translated means, &#8220;G<span class=\"small-caps\">OD WITH US<\/span>.&#8221; <sup>24<\/sup>\u00a0And Joseph awoke from his sleep and did as the angel of the Lord commanded him, and took <em>Mary<\/em> as his wife, <sup>25<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">Lit <em>and was not knowing her<\/em><\/span>but kept her a virgin until she gave birth to a Son; and he called His name Jesus. <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=matthew 1:18-25&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 1:18-25<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>While reading about the birth of Jesus, a phrase stood out to me that I never noticed before. I don\u2019t know how many times I have read this, but I guess God keeps showing me new things when I open up the Bible to read with His guidance.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the second half of verse 21, we read the angel telling Joseph, \u201c<strong>For He <\/strong>[Jesus]<strong> will save His people from their sins.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>This is the big overall mission of Jesus\u2019 life as told to Jesus\u2019 earthly father, but something interesting that I never saw until now is the phrase \u201cHis people\u201d in this statement: \u201c<strong>for He will save <u>His people<\/u> from their sins.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>The angel could have said Jesus would save all of humanity from their sins, but he doesn\u2019t. The angel could have said Jesus would save all of \u201cGod\u2019s people\u201d from their sins, but he doesn\u2019t. Instead, the angel tells Joseph that Jesus will save all of Jesus\u2019 people from their sins.<\/p>\r\n<p>So who exactly are \u201cJesus\u2019 people\u201d?<\/p>\r\n<p>When reading this, and seeing what could have been vs. what is, I am lead to believe that saying \u201cJesus\u2019 people\u201d means all of those people who have put their faith and hope in Jesus, as their \u201csacrificial lamb\u201d to pay the price for their sins. Those living before the cross had the symbol of the crucifixion and of Jesus through the sacrifice\/death of a lamb, and all of us living after the cross have the crucifixion event as an even clearer picture of this truth.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>By accepting the gift of Jesus\u2019 sacrifice, we align ourselves with Him and become one of His people.<\/strong> This can be summed up with the phrase \u201ctrust and obey\u201d: <strong>We trust in His sacrifice, and we show that we love and accept Him by obeying what He has told us to do.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>In the angel\u2019s message, we see Jesus creating a new group of people: His people \u2013 and this group of people would overlap but also be distinct from all groups of people before it.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--459\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
