{"id":377,"date":"2024-09-18T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-09-18T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=377&2024"},"modified":"2024-09-16T18:00:55","modified_gmt":"2024-09-17T00:00:55","slug":"unprepared-luke-21-5-19","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/unprepared-luke-21-5-19\/","title":{"rendered":"Unprepared: Luke 21:5-19"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Luke 21:5-19 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0And while some were talking about the temple, that it was adorned with beautiful stones and votive gifts, He said, <sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;<em>As for<\/em> these things which you are looking at, the days will come in which there will not be left one stone upon another which will not be torn down.&#8221;<\/span> <\/p><p><sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0They questioned Him, saying, &#8220;Teacher, when therefore will these things happen? And what <em>will be<\/em> the sign when these things are about to take place?&#8221; <sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0And He said, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;See to it that you are not misled; for many will come in My name, saying, &#8216;I am <em>He,<\/em>&#8217; and, &#8216;The time is near.&#8217; Do not go after them.<\/span> <sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">When you hear of wars and disturbances, do not be terrified; for these things must take place first, but the end <em>does<\/em> not <em>follow<\/em> immediately.&#8221;<\/span><\/p><p><sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0Then He continued by saying to them, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;Nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom,<\/span> <sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">and there will be great earthquakes, and in various places plagues and famines; and there will be terrors and great signs from heaven.<\/span> <\/p><p><sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;But before all these things, they will lay their hands on you and will persecute you, delivering you to the synagogues and prisons, bringing you before kings and governors for My name&#8217;s sake.<\/span> <sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony.<\/span> <sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;<\/span> <sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.<\/span> <sup>16<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">But you will be betrayed even by parents and brothers and relatives and friends, and they will put <em>some<\/em> of you to death,<\/span> <sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">and you will be hated by all because of My name.<\/span> <sup>18<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">Yet not a hair of your head will perish.<\/span> <sup>19<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">By your endurance you will gain your lives.<\/span> <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=luke 21:5-19&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 21:5-19<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>One morning, while studying this passage, a phrase caught me off guard.<\/p>\r\n<p>You might know the feeling. You\u2019re reading along, perhaps remembering many of the past times you read this same passage, and then you see it \u2013 a sentence or phrase that you never realized was there. \u201cWho snuck that into my Bible?!\u201d you ask.<\/p>\r\n<p>Well, I had a similar moment while reading this passage. I was reading along, until verse 14 jumped out at me and caused me to pause. Here\u2019s verses 13-15 to give verse 14 context: \u201c<strong>It will lead to an opportunity for your testimony.<\/strong><strong> <em>So make up your minds not to prepare beforehand to defend yourselves;<\/em> for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.<\/strong>\u201d [verse 14 italicized]<\/p>\r\n<p>By nature, by experience, or maybe even by personality I am a natural planner. My mind is always exploring the possible options and the various potential outcomes for my current list of upcoming decisions. If there is a possibility for something to happen, such as guest speaking or receiving an urgent new project at work, I will have a basic plan in place. This is why verse 14 challenges me.<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus tells His followers <em>not<\/em> to prepare beforehand. With my track record, I don\u2019t know if I am capable of \u201cnot preparing\u201d for anything. I suppose if I am faced with this type of opportunity to share my faith, I will need to force myself to not think about it, because my thoughts will organize themselves into a plan.<\/p>\r\n<p>But, with this challenge, Jesus also gives a promise: \u201c<strong>for I will give you utterance and wisdom which none of your opponents will be able to resist or refute.<\/strong>\u201d (verse 15)<\/p>\r\n<p>Not only is this promise huge, it also brings peace into my mind and my heart. However, Jesus\u2019 promise does not say that our opponents will accept the words He gives us, or that we will become friends afterwards. We need to look no further than the formerly blind man who was pulled in before the Pharisees and chief priests in John 9:13-34. They repeatedly questioned him, and when finally things have become about as tense as they will get in verses 30-33, the formerly blind man gives such a wise remark that it cannot be refuted, even though the leaders reject it.<\/p>\r\n<p>In our passage for this entry, <strong>Jesus promises to do the same for us as He did through the Holy Spirit with this formerly blind man. The formerly blind man\u2019s profound statement was perfectly timed and it couldn\u2019t have been planned beforehand. Focus on staying close to Jesus, and He will help you respond to any accusations that come your way.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--377\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
