Focus Passage: John 7:1-9 (NASB)<\/div>

1<\/sup>\u00a0After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2<\/sup>\u00a0Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. 3<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4<\/sup>\u00a0For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known<\/em> publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5<\/sup>\u00a0For not even His brothers were believing in Him. 6<\/sup>\u00a0So Jesus *<\/span>This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.<\/span> 7<\/sup>\u00a0The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.<\/span> 8<\/sup>\u00a0Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”<\/span> 9<\/sup>\u00a0Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. <\/p>

Often, when reading though the gospels, I come across a passage I had never really paid much attention to before, but something in it jumps out and shows me something new about Jesus.<\/p>\r\n

As I read this journal entry\u2019s passage, which is one I had often skimmed over before, I found a great reminder of how Jesus was intentionally counter cultural \u2013 and this realization is directly related to a faulty assumption that Jesus\u2019 own siblings make about who He is.<\/p>\r\n

In verse 4, in the middle of Jesus\u2019 brothers scolding Him for avoiding the spotlight, they give away their motives: \u201cFor no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known<\/em> publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\r\n

The first incorrect assumption Jesus\u2019 brothers make is that Jesus is seeking to be known publicly. By this point in Jesus\u2019 ministry, He has been gaining popularity, but His brothers incorrectly assume that fame is the goal. They reveal their motives in this request: they want to ride on Jesus\u2019 momentum and be famous alongside Him as His brothers.<\/p>\r\n

Nowhere in the gospels do I see Jesus seeking fame or attention onto Himself. He is repeatedly tempted to do so, but He never caves into the temptation.<\/p>\r\n

The second incorrect assumption Jesus\u2019 brothers make is that Jesus\u2019 desire is to show Himself to the world. While in one sense, this is Jesus\u2019 purpose in life, the context is completely different. Jesus\u2019 brothers want Jesus to declare Himself as the Savior of the world when He is popular, and in a position of strength. Jesus\u2019 purpose is instead to reveal Himself to the world when He is hated, rejected, and in a position of weakness.<\/p>\r\n

Jesus disciples assume Jesus has pride in His heart. Pride desires attention and people\u2019s focus. Jesus\u2019 brothers want the status and attention, but Jesus isn\u2019t interested. Everything Jesus did while on earth focused on helping the individual person, showing God\u2019s love to those who society had rejected, and to give glory to the Father.<\/p>\r\n

Jesus reveals this contrast in His response to His brothers, \u201cMy time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune. The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.<\/strong>\u201d (verses 6b-7)<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Jesus came to reveal how big the gap is between God and us. He came to show us that even when we are at our best, we are still not able to return to God. Jesus\u2019 life and ministry speaks out against a world that says we can make it on our own. His ministry, from start to finish, reveals how we need God\u2019s help, and how He came to meet that need.<\/p>\r\n

But even with Jesus knowing His key role, He wants the fame to go to the Father. Jesus ministry was designed to make God famous. Everything in His ministry was focused on this one point.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
