So he used this illustration when he spoke to them:  <sup class=\"versenum\">8\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhen someone invites you to a wedding, don\u2019t take the place of honor. Maybe someone more important than you was invited.  <sup class=\"versenum\">9\u00a0<\/sup>Then your host would say to you, \u2018Give this person your place.\u2019 Embarrassed, you would have to take the place of least honor.  <sup class=\"versenum\">10\u00a0<\/sup>So when you\u2019re invited, take the place of least honor. Then, when your host comes, he will tell you, \u2018Friend, move to a more honorable place.\u2019 Then all the other guests will see how you are honored.  <sup class=\"versenum\">11\u00a0<\/sup>Those who honor themselves will be humbled, but people who humble themselves will be honored.\u201d<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">12\u00a0<\/sup>Then he told the man who had invited him, \u201cWhen you invite people for lunch or dinner, don\u2019t invite only your friends, family, other relatives, or rich neighbors. Otherwise, they will return the favor.  <sup class=\"versenum\">13\u00a0<\/sup>Instead, when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the handicapped, the lame, and the blind.  <sup class=\"versenum\">14\u00a0<\/sup>Then you will be blessed because they don\u2019t have any way to pay you back. You will be paid back when those who have God\u2019s approval come back to life.\u201d<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">15\u00a0<\/sup>One of those eating with him heard this. So he said to Jesus, \u201cThe person who will be at the banquet in God\u2019s kingdom is blessed.\u201d<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">16\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said to him, \u201cA man gave a large banquet and invited many people.  <sup class=\"versenum\">17\u00a0<\/sup>When it was time for the banquet, he sent his servant to tell those who were invited, \u2018Come! Everything is ready now.\u2019<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">18\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cEveryone asked to be excused. The first said to him, \u2018I bought a field, and I need to see it. Please excuse me.\u2019  <sup class=\"versenum\">19\u00a0<\/sup>Another said, \u2018I bought five pairs of oxen, and I\u2019m on my way to see how well they plow. Please excuse me.\u2019  <sup class=\"versenum\">20\u00a0<\/sup>Still another said, \u2018I recently got married, and that\u2019s why I can\u2019t come.\u2019<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">21\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe servant went back to report this to his master. Then the master of the house became angry. He told his servant, \u2018Run to every street and alley in the city! Bring back the poor, the handicapped, the blind, and the lame.\u2019<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">22\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThe servant said, \u2018Sir, what you\u2019ve ordered has been done. But there is still room for more people.\u2019<\/p> <p><sup class=\"versenum\">23\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cThen the master told his servant, \u2018Go to the roads and paths! Urge the people to come to my house. I want it to be full.  <sup class=\"versenum\">24\u00a0<\/sup>I can guarantee that none of those invited earlier will taste any food at my banquet.\u2019\u201d<\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke 14:7-24&amp;version=gw\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 14:7-24<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Have you ever been turned away from an event before?<\/p>\r\n<p>Perhaps you arrived late and the doors were closed, perhaps you did not have a ticket or invitation, or maybe you were too far back in line and the room was already full by the time you arrived.<\/p>\r\n<p>Whatever the case for being turned away is, it does not feel good \u2013 which makes me wonder why God, represented by the Master\/Host in this parable, wants such a full banquet hall that \u201cnone of those invited earlier will taste any food at my banquet.\u201d <em>(v. 24)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>It would appear as though simply turning people away because they rejected is not enough. It seems like He wants it so full that even if one of the earlier invitees reconsiders and shows up late, there wouldn\u2019t be any room \u2013 even the \u201cstanding only\u201d space would be all filled up.<\/p>\r\n<p>This doesn\u2019t seem like a loving, inclusive, and forgiving God \u2013 but then why would Jesus have spoken it? Why would God\/Jesus be this bluntly exclusive to those who originally rejected the invitation?<\/p>\r\n<p>I don\u2019t know.<\/p>\r\n<p>One reason for this might be because God had a different idea in mind for these original invitees. There is no way of knowing this within the decisions and details in the parable itself, but I wonder if the invitation itself asked the person being invited to also bring their friends.<\/p>\r\n<p>If this were the case, the original invitees would have been responsible for filling up the banquet hall with their friends (and their friends of friends) and the Master would have had a full banquet hall without needing to bypass the original invitees. Because the original invitees reject the invitation, the Master goes around them to get to the people He wants to include.<\/p>\r\n<p>If God gets irritated, this might be a place where we could see it. It seems as though the Master (i.e. God) is irritated because those He originally invited rejected the invitation and we see this in His desire to see the banquet hall so full that these people are excluded.<\/p>\r\n<p>This brings me to our big idea: <strong>God wants us to be inclusive towards others and Him. We are to be matchmakers \u2013 connecting our friends to our God and Savior.
