Focus Passage: Mark 10:46-52 (GNT)<\/div>

46\u00a0<\/sup>They came to Jericho, and as Jesus was leaving with his disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus son of Timaeus was sitting by the road. 47\u00a0<\/sup>When he heard that it was Jesus of Nazareth, he began to shout, \u201cJesus! Son of David! Have mercy on me!\u201d<\/p>

48\u00a0<\/sup>Many of the people scolded him and told him to be quiet. But he shouted even more loudly, \u201cSon of David, have mercy on me!\u201d<\/p>

49\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus stopped and said, \u201cCall him.\u201d<\/p>

So they called the blind man. \u201cCheer up!\u201d they said. \u201cGet up, he is calling you.\u201d<\/p>

50\u00a0<\/sup>So he threw off his cloak, jumped up, and came to Jesus.<\/p>

51\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cWhat do you want me to do for you?\u201d Jesus asked him.<\/p>

\u201cTeacher,\u201d the blind man answered, \u201cI want to see again.\u201d<\/p>

52\u00a0<\/sup>\u201cGo,\u201d Jesus told him, \u201cyour faith has made you well.\u201d<\/p>

At once he was able to see and followed Jesus on the road.<\/p>\r\n

Have you ever told someone to do something, and instead they do the opposite?<\/p>\r\n

Have you ever been that person \u2013 the one to do the opposite of what you were told?<\/p>\r\n

In our passage for this post, we find an example of this type of disobedience displayed, but in this case, would we blame the disobedient person?<\/p>\r\n

In this passage, Jesus heals Bartimaeus, a formerly blind beggar who lived in or near Jericho. Following the healing, Jesus says, \u201cGo, your faith has made you well.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 52a)<\/em> However instead of going away, Bartimaeus chooses to \u201cgo\u201d follow Jesus: \u201cAt once he was able to see and followed Jesus on the road.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 52b)<\/em><\/p>\r\n

Such disobedience: Bartimaeus chooses to follow the person who healed him.<\/p>\r\n

If you are like me, I am not surprised at all by this reaction \u2013 even if it is counter to what Jesus said. When God does a miracle in our lives, following Him is a perfectly acceptable response.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

However, is there something deeper in Jesus\u2019 command to \u201cGo\u201d?<\/p>\r\n

What if when Jesus said \u201cGo\u201d, the idea He was saying was \u201cBe free [from your disability]\u201d? In this angle, Bartimaeus was freed to see instantly, and this freedom allowed Him to choose whether to follow the One who freed Him, or choose to share what Jesus did with those in his community.<\/p>\r\n

We could understand this also in Jesus\u2019 similar command to, \u201cGo, and sin no more.\u201d We could angle this to say \u201cBe free, and choose to never go back.\u201d This then wouldn\u2019t be a command to never sin ever again, but a challenge to not repeat the same mistakes we\u2019ve made, to learn and grow from our mistakes, and to redirect our life towards God\u2019s ideal for us.<\/p>\r\n

In our own lives, when Jesus sets us free, will we thank Him and go our own way, or will we choose to follow Him\u2014the One who set us free?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
