Jesus was tired from his long trip, so he sat down beside the well. It was about twelve o\u2019clock noon. <sup>7\u00a0<\/sup>When a Samaritan woman came to the well to get some water, Jesus said to her, \u201cPlease give me a drink.\u201d <sup>8\u00a0<\/sup>(This happened while Jesus\u2019 followers were in town buying some food.)<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>9\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said, \u201cI am surprised that you ask me for a drink, since you are a Jewish man and I am a Samaritan woman.\u201d (Jewish people are not friends with Samaritans.)<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>10\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said, \u201cIf you only knew the free gift of God and who it is that is asking you for water, you would have asked him, and he would have given you living water.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>11\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said, \u201cSir, where will you get this living water? The well is very deep, and you have nothing to get water with. <sup>12\u00a0<\/sup>Are you greater than Jacob, our father, who gave us this well and drank from it himself along with his sons and flocks?\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>13\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus answered, \u201cEveryone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, <sup>14\u00a0<\/sup>but whoever drinks the water I give will never be thirsty. The water I give will become a spring of water gushing up inside that person, giving eternal life.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>15\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said to him, \u201cSir, give me this water so I will never be thirsty again and will not have to come back here to get more water.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>16\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus told her, \u201cGo get your husband and come back here.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>17\u00a0<\/sup>The woman answered, \u201cI have no husband.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus said to her, \u201cYou are right to say you have no husband. <sup>18\u00a0<\/sup>Really you have had five husbands, and the man you live with now is not your husband. You told the truth.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>19\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said, \u201cSir, I can see that you are a prophet. <sup>20\u00a0<\/sup>Our ancestors worshiped on this mountain, but you say that Jerusalem is the place where people must worship.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>21\u00a0<\/sup>Jesus said, \u201cBelieve me, woman. The time is coming when neither in Jerusalem nor on this mountain will you actually worship the Father. <sup>22\u00a0<\/sup>You Samaritans worship something you don\u2019t understand. We understand what we worship, because salvation comes from the Jews. <sup>23\u00a0<\/sup>The time is coming when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, and that time is here already. You see, the Father too is actively seeking such people to worship him. <sup>24\u00a0<\/sup>God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>25\u00a0<\/sup>The woman said, \u201cI know that the Messiah is coming.\u201d (Messiah is the One called Christ.) \u201cWhen the Messiah comes, he will explain everything to us.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>26\u00a0<\/sup>Then Jesus said, \u201cI am he\u2014I, the one talking to you.\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p><sup>27\u00a0<\/sup>Just then his followers came back from town and were surprised to see him talking with a woman.
