But unless you repent, you too will all perish. <sup class=\"versenum\">4<\/sup> Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them\u2014do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? <sup class=\"versenum\">5<\/sup> I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.\u201d <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">6<\/sup> Then he told this parable: \u201cA man had a fig tree, planted in his vineyard, and he went to look for fruit on it, but did not find any. <sup class=\"versenum\">7<\/sup> So he said to the man who took care of the vineyard, \u2018For three years now I\u2019ve been coming to look for fruit on this fig tree and haven\u2019t found any. Cut it down! Why should it use up the soil?\u2019 <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">8<\/sup> \u201c\u00a0\u2018Sir,\u2019 the man replied, \u2018leave it alone for one more year, and I\u2019ll dig around it and fertilize it. <sup class=\"versenum\">9<\/sup> If it bears fruit next year, fine! If not, then cut it down.\u2019\u00a0\u201d <\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke 13:1-9&amp;version=niv\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 13:1-9<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>While we often time read this passage and focus in on the parable that it includes, we can learn a valuable truth from what is shared immediately before the parable is told.<\/p>\r\n<p>In the conversation leading up to the parable, Jesus is told about a group of Galileans who were killed in a certain way. The implied question is whether they were worse sinners than others who had died. Jesus draws the question out into the open and then compares it to another accidental event where a tower fell and killed a number of people.<\/p>\r\n<p>The big idea that I want to bring out from this passage comes from looking at these two death events. The first event was a \u201cgovernment\u201d slaughter \u2013 the ruler chose to kill a group of people for whatever reason. The second event was a \u201cnatural\u201d disaster \u2013 a tower fell down and killed a group of people.<\/p>\r\n<p>What stands out to me in both these cases is that <strong>we don\u2019t choose when we will die<\/strong>. Even those who have chosen to commit suicide don\u2019t always \u201csucceed\u201d. Both these cases are situations where the people who died did not die from some act they chose to do. Instead, these deaths were thrust upon them from an outside source.<\/p>\r\n<p>Which brings us to the big idea that is a theme running through these first few verses: <strong>Life is short, and we don\u2019t choose when we\u2019ll die. The bad that happens around us is a reminder to live a life that continually leans on God. That is the only way to ensure we\u2019ll be saved for the life to come.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--247\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
