{"id":201,"date":"2022-12-07T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2022-12-07T10:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=201&#038;2022"},"modified":"2023-06-30T20:56:52","modified_gmt":"2023-07-01T02:56:52","slug":"allying-with-jesus-luke-14-25-35","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/allying-with-jesus-luke-14-25-35\/","title":{"rendered":"Allying With Jesus: Luke 14:25-35"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: Luke 14:25-35 (TNIV)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\"><p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <sup class=\"versenum\">25<\/sup> Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said:  <sup class=\"versenum\">26<\/sup> \u201cIf anyone comes to me and does not hate father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters\u2014yes, even life itself\u2014such a person cannot be my disciple.  <sup class=\"versenum\">27<\/sup> And whoever does not carry their cross and follow me cannot be my disciple. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <sup class=\"versenum\">28<\/sup> \u201cSuppose one of you wants to build a tower. Won\u2019t you first sit down and estimate the cost to see if you have enough money to complete it?  <sup class=\"versenum\">29<\/sup> For if you lay the foundation and are not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule you,  <sup class=\"versenum\">30<\/sup> saying, \u2018This person began to build and wasn\u2019t able to finish.\u2019 <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <sup class=\"versenum\">31<\/sup> \u201cOr suppose a king is about to go to war against another king. Won\u2019t he first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?  <sup class=\"versenum\">32<\/sup> If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.  <sup class=\"versenum\">33<\/sup> In the same way, those of you who do not give up everything you have cannot be my disciples. <\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <sup class=\"versenum\">34<\/sup> \u201cSalt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  <sup class=\"versenum\">35<\/sup> It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out. <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 \u201cWhoever has ears to hear, let them hear.\u201d <\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Luke 14:25-35&amp;version=tniv\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Luke 14:25-35<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Throughout the gospels, as Jesus moved from town to town, He attracted large crowds and plenty of fans who enjoyed watching and listening to Him. However, periodically, to challenge the crowd\u2019s motivation, Jesus would share difficult to accept ideas.<\/p>\r\n<p>In our passage for this journal entry, let\u2019s focus on the progression of the ideas presented in one of the times Jesus challenged the crowds that were following Him.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n <li><strong>Verse 26:<\/strong> Jesus give one of His most challenging statements regarding following Him \u2013 something that would make people really question whether or not it was worth it.<\/li>\r\n <li><strong>Verse 27:<\/strong> Jesus then gives them the direction their life will go \u2013 the cross, which meant rejection, humiliation, as well as death. <em>So far, we don\u2019t see a very bright (optimistic) picture.<\/em><\/li>\r\n <li><strong>Verses 28-30:<\/strong> Jesus then give a comparison about building a tower, and how ridiculous it is for someone to only build it half way \u2013 whether that is because they didn\u2019t plan ahead and ran out of money, or because they became disinterested and simply stopped. <em>This tells me that our commitment and dedication must be there until the end.<\/em><\/li>\r\n <li><strong>Verses 31-32:<\/strong> Jesus gives a strategic thought which compares death (attacking a stronger king), vs. submission <em>(surrendering to a stronger king)<\/em>.<\/li>\r\n <li><strong>Verse 33:<\/strong> Jesus summarizes the completeness of the dedication of His true followers \u2013 that they give up everything in order to follow Jesus.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Looking at this progression, we have Jesus being the most important relationship, so important that it doesn\u2019t matter what other people think, say, or do \u2013 even if it results in death. <\/p>\r\n<p>We then see Jesus challenging us and saying this commitment must be complete and a half-dedicated disciple looks as ridiculous as someone who has a half-built building.<\/p>\r\n<p>And finally we move to the idea that we face either death or submission because the enemy is stronger than we are.<\/p>\r\n<p>We give up everything to follow Jesus, we intentionally make Him the priority in our lives, and we resolve to keep Him as our number one priority \u2013 each day.<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n <li><strong>Verses 34-35:<\/strong> Jesus describes His followers as salt \u2013 something that was used for flavoring and for preservation. When \u201csalt\u201d <em>(or a follower)<\/em> has lost its\/their purpose, they are completely useless.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><strong>To be followers of Jesus, we must be completely dedicated to Jesus, we must submit to His will and plan for us as long as we are alive, and we must live a life that shows our dedication to Him in such a way that it impacts others.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--201\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
