These things I did not say to you at the beginning, because I was with you.<\/span><\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john 15:18-16:4&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">John 15:18-16:4<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Today\u2019s passage is a challenging one for me, and today\u2019s big idea within this passage is one that won\u2019t <em>(and shouldn\u2019t)<\/em> be popular. It is something that should rub most people the wrong way, not because of what it is directly, but instead by what is implied.<\/p>\r\n<p>In this passage Jesus says, <strong>\u201cIf the world hates you, you know that it has hated Me before it hated you. If you were of the world, the world would love its own; but because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, because of this the world hates you.\u201d<\/strong> <em>(verses 18-19)<\/em><\/p>\r\n<p>This is a well known passage in scripture, however, before jumping on to the next idea, let\u2019s pause, and ask ourselves who hated Jesus the most when He was here on earth. Was it the common working person? Was it women or children? Was it foreigners who were visiting Judea? Or was it the spiritual leaders in the regions where Jesus traveled? <\/p>\r\n<p>In almost every case, the spiritual leaders <em>(Pharisees, Sadducees, scribes, priests, etc.)<\/em> were the ones who seemed to hate Jesus the most. Common working people, women, and children sought Jesus out and created huge crowds that followed Jesus wherever He went. <\/p>\r\n<p>In at least one case, Jesus turns to the crowd at the end of a powerful sermon, and challenges their commitment \u2013 to the point that most of them leave. Did they leave because they \u201chated\u201d Jesus? I don\u2019t believe this to be the reason. Instead I believe the crowds dispersed because they thought Jesus\u2019 remarks were unrealistically high and\/or that He had gone nuts. However, these ideas are a far stretch from \u201chating\u201d Jesus.<\/p>\r\n<p>On the other hand, the spiritual leaders seemed to be envious of Jesus\u2019 popularity. They would have wanted for everyone to leave Jesus and follow them \u2013 and this caused hatred to enter their hearts.<\/p>\r\n<p>So here is today\u2019s big idea: <strong>When Jesus says that the \u201cworld\u201d will hate us like it hated Him, don\u2019t be surprised if \u201cspiritual\u201d people <em>(including \u201cChristians\u201d)<\/em> hate you.<\/strong> Spiritual people hated Jesus <em>(and His disciples)<\/em>, and the closer we are to Jesus, the more likely this will be the case for us as well.<\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--173\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
