Focus Passage: Luke 15:1-10 (NASB)<\/div>

1<\/sup>\u00a0Now all the tax collectors and the sinners were coming near Him to listen to Him. 2<\/sup>\u00a0Both the Pharisees and the scribes began<\/em> to grumble, saying, “This man receives sinners and eats with them.” <\/p>

3<\/sup>\u00a0So He told them this parable, saying, 4<\/sup>\u00a0“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and has lost one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the open pasture and go after the one which is lost until he finds it?<\/span> 5<\/sup>\u00a0When he has found it, he lays it on his shoulders, rejoicing.<\/span> 6<\/sup>\u00a0And when he comes home, he calls together his friends and his neighbors, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep which was lost!’<\/span> 7<\/sup>\u00a0I tell you that in the same way, there will be more<\/em> joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who need no repentance.<\/span><\/p>

8<\/sup>\u00a0“Or what woman, if she has ten silver coins and loses one coin, does not light a lamp and sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it?<\/span> 9<\/sup>\u00a0When she has found it, she calls together her friends and neighbors, saying, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found the coin which I had lost!’<\/span> 10<\/sup>\u00a0In the same way, I tell you, there is joy in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents.”<\/span><\/p>

One of the things that in this passage that stands out is how the Pharisees respond to what they see Jesus doing. Let’s focus in specifically on what they say to inspire Jesus\u2019 parable.<\/p>\r\n

In verse 2 we read about Pharisees grumbling that \u201cThis man receives sinners and eats with them.\u201d<\/strong> The Pharisees had made a name for themselves by being exclusive towards sinners. They exalted themselves by putting down and labeling others.<\/p>\r\n

Then Jesus comes along, and they recognized that He was smart enough to be part of their elite group, but He didn\u2019t have any desire to be. They seem insulted and hostile because Jesus chose to be different and openly associate with those who they intentionally chose to exclude and put down.<\/p>\r\n

Which brings me to our big idea: Is there someone you are intentionally excluding in your life? How would you feel if Jesus made it a point to hang out with them instead of with you?<\/strong><\/p>\r\n

While this thought is very simple, it is also pretty challenging, and if we pay attention to it, this thought has the potential to be life changing.<\/em><\/p>\r\n
