To set the stage for this event, and for Jesus\u2019 response, we read about a brief prediction Jesus shares as He and the disciples were leaving the temple.<\/p>\r\n<p>Our passage is found in several of the gospels, but for our time together in this episode, we will look at Mark\u2019s gospel, chapter 13, and we will read from the New American Standard Bible translation. Starting in verse 1, Mark tells us that:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0As He was going out of the temple, one of His disciples\u00a0said to Him, \u201cTeacher, behold\u00a0what wonderful stones and what wonderful buildings!\u201d\u00a0<sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0And Jesus said to him,\u00a0\u201cDo you see these great buildings? Not one stone will be left upon another which will not be torn down.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>Pausing our reading briefly here, I wonder if the disciples, and perhaps the unnamed disciple who made the original statement, were bothered by Jesus\u2019 prediction that the temple would be destroyed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Because this was on their minds as the afternoon passed and evening came, we discover that some of the disciples want a little more information.<\/p>\r\n<p>Picking back up reading in verse 3, Mark tells us that:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0As He was sitting on the Mount of Olives opposite the temple, Peter and James and John and Andrew were questioning Him privately,\u00a0<sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cTell us, when will these things be, and what\u00a0<em>will be<\/em>\u00a0the sign when all these things are going to be fulfilled?\u201d\u00a0<sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0And Jesus began to say to them,\u00a0\u201cSee to it that no one misleads you.\u00a0<sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0Many will come in My name, saying, \u2018I am\u00a0<em>He!\u2019<\/em>\u00a0and will mislead many.\u00a0<sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be frightened;\u00a0<em>those things<\/em>\u00a0must take place; but\u00a0<em>that is<\/em>\u00a0not yet the end. <sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0For nation will rise up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom; there will be earthquakes in various places; there will\u00a0<em>also<\/em>\u00a0be famines. These things are\u00a0<em>merely<\/em>\u00a0the beginning of birth pangs.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cBut be on your guard; for they will deliver you to\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0courts, and you will be flogged in\u00a0<em>the<\/em>\u00a0synagogues, and you will stand before governors and kings for My sake, as a testimony to them.\u00a0<sup>10<\/sup>\u00a0The gospel must first be preached to all the nations.\u00a0<sup>11<\/sup>\u00a0When they arrest you and hand you over, do not worry beforehand about what you are to say, but say whatever is given you in that hour; for it is not you who speak, but\u00a0<em>it is<\/em>\u00a0the Holy Spirit.\u00a0<sup>12<\/sup>\u00a0Brother will betray brother to death, and a father\u00a0<em>his<\/em>\u00a0child; and children will rise up against parents and have them put to death.\u00a0<sup>13<\/sup>\u00a0You will be hated by all because of My name, but the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>14<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cBut when you see the\u00a0abomination of desolation\u00a0standing where it should not be\u00a0(let the reader understand),\u00a0then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains.\u00a0<sup>15<\/sup>\u00a0The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house; <sup>16<\/sup>\u00a0and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat.\u00a0<sup>17<\/sup>\u00a0But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days!\u00a0<sup>18<\/sup>\u00a0But pray that it may not happen in the winter.\u00a0<sup>19<\/sup>\u00a0For those days will be a\u00a0<em>time of<\/em>\u00a0tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will.\u00a0<sup>20<\/sup>\u00a0Unless the Lord had shortened\u00a0<em>those<\/em>\u00a0days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days.\u00a0<sup>21<\/sup>\u00a0And then if anyone says to you, \u2018Behold, here is the Christ\u2019; or, \u2018Behold,\u00a0<em>He is<\/em>\u00a0there\u2019; do not believe\u00a0<em>him; <\/em><sup>22<\/sup>\u00a0for false Christs and false prophets will arise, and will show signs and wonders, in order to lead astray, if possible, the elect.\u00a0<sup>23<\/sup>\u00a0But take heed; behold, I have told you everything in advance.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>24<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cBut in those days, after that tribulation,\u00a0the sun will be darkened\u00a0and the moon will not give its light,\u00a0<sup>25<\/sup>\u00a0and the stars will be falling\u00a0from heaven, and the powers that are in the heavens will be shaken.\u00a0<sup>26<\/sup>\u00a0Then they will see\u00a0the\u00a0Son of\u00a0Man\u00a0coming in clouds\u00a0with great power and glory.\u00a0<sup>27<\/sup>\u00a0And then He will send forth the angels, and will gather together His elect from the four winds, from the farthest end of the earth to the farthest end of heaven.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong><sup>28<\/sup>\u00a0\u201cNow learn the parable from the fig tree: when its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near.\u00a0<sup>29<\/sup>\u00a0Even so, you too, when you see these things happening, recognize that He is near,\u00a0<em>right<\/em>\u00a0at the door.\u00a0<sup>30<\/sup>\u00a0Truly I say to you, this\u00a0generation will not pass away until all these things take place.\u00a0<sup>31<\/sup>\u00a0Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>In this long passage, Jesus shares a broad look at the future of the world. While there are plenty of specific parts we could focus on within Jesus\u2019 response, the part I want to focus in on for the rest of our time together is the last few verses. Jesus concludes this teaching by telling the disciples that they should pay attention to what is happening around them in the world and know that when we hear and see things happening, such as wars and rumors of wars, that we can be reminded that Jesus is coming soon.<\/p>\r\n<p>While Jesus promises that the current generation of people would not pass away until all these things took place \u2013 which is something that is perplexing in itself and something that would take too much time than we have left to dig into \u2013 the closing words in Jesus\u2019 message is one of the biggest promises we can find in the entire Bible. Jesus tells these disciples in verse 31 that \u201c<strong>Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will not pass away.<\/strong>\u201d<\/p>\r\n<p>This promise is powerful, because it reminds us that with whatever happens in this life, and whatever Satan tries to throw at us to take our focus off of God, in the end, Jesus\u2019 words and His message will survive. <strong>Jesus\u2019 words last forever. Jesus\u2019 words last longer than sin. Jesus\u2019 words bring eternal life.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>We are reminded and challenged with the truth that we will be hated and abused by people in this world because we follow Jesus, but those who endure to the end will be saved. We are challenged to endure to the end of our lives or until Jesus returns, and the reward for our endurance is eternity \u2013 specifically an eternity in a sinless, perfect, recreated world.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>As we come to the end of another podcast episode, here are the challenges I will leave you with:<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Be sure to always place God first and to stay loyal to Him. Choose to endure and ignore those who try to challenge our faith because we know from Jesus\u2019 promise that those who endure to the end find salvation.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><strong>Also, as I always challenge you to do, be sure to pray and study the Bible for yourself to grow your personal relationship with God each and every day.
