There was once a landowner who planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a hole for the wine press, and built a watchtower. Then he rented the vineyard to tenants and left home on a trip.\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">34<\/sup> When the time came to gather the grapes, he sent his slaves to the tenants to receive his share of the harvest.\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">35<\/sup> The tenants grabbed his slaves, beat one, killed another, and stoned another.\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">36<\/sup> Again the man sent other slaves, more than the first time, and the tenants treated them the same way.\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">37<\/sup> Last of all he sent his son to them. <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0Surely they will respect my son, he said.\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">38<\/sup> But when the tenants saw the son, they said to themselves, <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This is the owner\u2019s son. Come on, let\u2019s kill him, and we will get his property!\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">39<\/sup> So they grabbed him, threw him out of the vineyard, and killed him.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">40<\/sup> Now, when the owner of the vineyard comes, what will he do to those tenants? Jesus asked.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">41<\/sup> He will certainly kill those evil men, they answered, <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0and rent the vineyard out to other tenants, who will give him his share of the harvest at the right time.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">42<\/sup> Jesus said to them, Haven\u2019t you ever read what the Scriptures say?<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0The stone which the builders rejected as worthless <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0turned out to be the most important of all. <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0This was done by the Lord; <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0what a wonderful sight it is!<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">43<\/sup> And so I tell you, added Jesus, <br>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0the Kingdom of God will be taken away from you and given to a people who will produce the proper fruits.<\/p>\r\n<p>\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">45<\/sup> The chief priests and the Pharisees heard Jesus\u2019 parables and knew that he was talking about them,\u00a0<sup class=\"versenum\">46<\/sup> so they tried to arrest him. But they were afraid of the crowds, who considered Jesus to be a prophet.<\/p>\r\n<p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Matthew 21:33-46&amp;version=gnt\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">Matthew 21:33-46<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>The parable we are focusing on in this journal entry is recorded in three of the four gospels, and it brings out a strong idea that our actions and attitudes matter to God. We will be pulling our big idea using Matthew\u2019s account of this parable, but it is also present in the other two gospel accounts. (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19&amp;version=GNT\" title=\"Read these other two accounts on Biblegateway.com.\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"underline\" rel=\"noopener\">Mark 12:1-12; Luke 20:9-19<\/a>).<\/p>\r\n<p>Our big idea is this: <strong>God gives us numerous chances to be \u201cfruitful\u201d, but there will be a point when He moves on.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p>One interesting thing about this parable is that the \u201ctenants\u201d don\u2019t directly \u201cproduce\u201d the fruit. Instead, fruit is produced by the land because of everything the landowner has set up. A farmer doesn\u2019t <em>make<\/em> fruits and vegetables \u2013 he harvests <em>(or gathers)<\/em> what the plants have produced.<\/p>\r\n<p>This tells me that when we are being \u201cfruitful\u201d, we are passing along the blessings that God has given to us. The landowner\u2019s big problem with the tenants is that they don\u2019t pass the fruit that was produced up to him. We fall into the same trap when we don\u2019t return to God a portion of what God has blessed us with \u2013 and this doesn\u2019t just include our money, but also our time, talents, abilities, and gratitude as well.<\/p>\r\n<p><strong>The reason we can be fruitful at all is because God has blessed us with life, love, and opportunity. \u201cAnd from the one trusted with much, much more will be expected.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<p><em>What are you and I doing with the opportunity that God has blessed us with?<\/em><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--136\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
