{"id":1336,"date":"2025-09-02T03:00:00","date_gmt":"2025-09-02T09:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/?p=1336&2025"},"modified":"2025-08-28T18:00:04","modified_gmt":"2025-08-29T00:00:04","slug":"not-believing-in-jesus-john-7-1-9","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/reflectivebiblestudy.com\/gospeladventure\/not-believing-in-jesus-john-7-1-9\/","title":{"rendered":"Not Believing In Jesus: John 7:1-9"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"spoiler spoiler-style-2\"><div class=\"spoiler-title\">Focus Passage: John 7:1-9 (NASB)<\/div><div class=\"spoiler-content\" style=\"display: none;\"><p><sup>1<\/sup>\u00a0After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. <sup>2<\/sup>\u00a0Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. <sup>3<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore His brothers said to Him, &#8220;Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. <sup>4<\/sup>\u00a0For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be <em>known<\/em> publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.&#8221; <sup>5<\/sup>\u00a0For not even His brothers were believing in Him. <sup>6<\/sup>\u00a0So Jesus <span class=\"tooltiptrigger\">*<\/span><span class=\"tooltip\">This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>said to them, <span class=\"red-letter\">&#8220;My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.<\/span> <sup>7<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.<\/span> <sup>8<\/sup>\u00a0<span class=\"red-letter\">Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.&#8221;<\/span> <sup>9<\/sup>\u00a0Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. <\/p><p class=\"passage-read-more\">Read <a href=\"http:\/\/www.biblegateway.com\/passage\/?search=john 7:1-9&amp;version=NASB\" title=\"Read the passage on BibleGateway.com\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"hyperlink-underlined\">John 7:1-9<\/a> in context and\/or in other translations on BibleGateway.com!<\/p><\/div><\/div>\r\n<p>Sometime during the middle of Jesus\u2019 ministry, John\u2019s gospel describes a time when Jesus appears to be alone with His brothers. In this event, John records a startling detail that is profound when we look at it a little closer. John tells us that \u201c<strong>For not even His brothers were believing in Him.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 5)<\/p>\r\n<p>This detail is significant for us to pay attention to because too often, <strong>those closest to us may be among the least supportive of us.<\/strong> While this is not always the case, plenty of cases can validate this statement. However, I think most times those closest to us don\u2019t support us, they believe they are being helpful. Sometimes, help comes in the form of telling someone you love some difficult to accept things.<\/p>\r\n<p>Perhaps we don\u2019t feel supported by those we know love us because we know they don\u2019t approve of something we do, some people we associate with, or a habit we have. Sometimes having a lot of history with a person is not helpful for building a stronger relationship because people can get caught up with each other\u2019s faults.<\/p>\r\n<p>However, the word John uses in this statement is the word \u201cbelief\u201d and this is a little different than simply supporting someone. While believing in someone leads to supporting them and their decisions, believing in this context also means trusting, having faith in, and being loyal to the person in question. In this passage, John tells us that Jesus\u2019 brothers \u2013 those He was closest to and had the most history with \u2013 did not believe in Him.<\/p>\r\n<p>Jesus would have been aware of this and because of this lack of belief, trust, and faith, Jesus knows that it is better for Him not to travel with His brothers. While His brothers recognize that Jesus is special and that He can perform miracles, they miss understanding the purpose Jesus came and the counter-cultural way He saw Himself.<\/p>\r\n<p>Reading this prompts me to think that sometimes it is better to take a step back in our faith \u2013 but not a step back in a literal sense, but a step back to then focus again on the big picture. <strong>When we look at the big picture and keep our eyes open for examples of God leading and blessing people in the world around us, we can avoid the trap Jesus\u2019 brothers fell into because they had decades of history together \u2013 which included plenty of pretty normal events.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n<div id=\"aj-wrap-up--1336\" class=\"aj-wrap-up\"><p><em>This thought was inspired by studying the <strong>Walking With Jesus<\/strong> \u201cReflective Bible Study\u201d package.
