Focus Passage: John 7:1-9 (NASB)<\/div>

1<\/sup>\u00a0After these things Jesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him. 2<\/sup>\u00a0Now the feast of the Jews, the Feast of Booths, was near. 3<\/sup>\u00a0Therefore His brothers said to Him, “Leave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing. 4<\/sup>\u00a0For no one does anything in secret when he himself seeks to be known<\/em> publicly. If You do these things, show Yourself to the world.” 5<\/sup>\u00a0For not even His brothers were believing in Him. 6<\/sup>\u00a0So Jesus *<\/span>This word is present tense in the Greek, but it has been translated as past tense to conform to modern usage.<\/span>said to them, “My time is not yet here, but your time is always opportune.<\/span> 7<\/sup>\u00a0The world cannot hate you, but it hates Me because I testify of it, that its deeds are evil.<\/span> 8<\/sup>\u00a0Go up to the feast yourselves; I do not go up to this feast because My time has not yet fully come.”<\/span> 9<\/sup>\u00a0Having said these things to them, He stayed in Galilee. <\/p>

Part way into Jesus\u2019 ministry, John\u2019s gospel records an unusual occasion where Jesus is alone with His brothers, and it appears as though the disciples are not there with Him. While it is possible that the disciples were there, my mind has always assumed that they were not, simply because of a phrase that Jesus\u2019 brothers say.<\/p>\r\n

John tells us that one reason Jesus\u2019 brothers pressured Jesus to go up to Judea for the upcoming festival is so that Jesus\u2019 disciples may see His works. Jesus\u2019 brothers say, \u201cLeave here and go into Judea, so that Your disciples also may see Your works which You are doing.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 3)<\/p>\r\n

It wouldn\u2019t make much sense to say this if Jesus\u2019 disciples were walking alongside Jesus and His brothers.<\/p>\r\n

However, John opens this passage by giving us a reason Jesus did not want to travel to Judea. John tells us that, \u201cJesus was walking in Galilee, for He was unwilling to walk in Judea because the Jews were seeking to kill Him.<\/strong>\u201d (v. 1)<\/p>\r\n

Seeing these two details so close together makes me wonder if Jesus\u2019 brothers were trying to set Jesus up to turn Him in to the Jewish leaders. When we place these two details next to each other, we can easily see how someone could draw the conclusion that Jesus\u2019 brothers had aligned themselves with the Jewish leaders.<\/p>\r\n

However, Jesus\u2019 brothers simply could have missed the point of Jesus\u2019 ministry and the Messiah He came to be. The common view of the Messiah at that time was that God would send someone who would rally the Jews together and successfully kick the Romans out of their land. If Jesus\u2019 brothers held to this view, their suggestions make sense because Judea would have the greatest number of Jews to rally together for this cause.<\/p>\r\n

But in John\u2019s opening verse, we see an interesting side of Jesus. Jesus has chosen to \u201cretreat\u201d to Galilee, where His ministry began and where His brothers likely lived because it was a safe distance from the Jewish leaders who were looking to kill Him.<\/p>\r\n

So while Jesus\u2019 brothers may have been trying to set Jesus up to turn Him in, or whether they simply misunderstood why Jesus came to planet Earth, Jesus demonstrates strategic caution in this passage, and He ultimately chooses to not travel to Judea with His brothers for the festival. This tells me that sometimes, we focus on making wise, strategic choices rather than overly depending on God to protect us while we blaze forward for Him.<\/strong><\/p>\r\n
